About Myanmar Schoolhouse
မင်္ဂလာပါ။ I am an international school teacher and a mother raising my son overseas. I hold a BA in English from Yangon University in Burma, an MS in Special Education (K-12) from Barry University in Miami, Florida, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Mathematics (K-8) from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Additionally, I hold a professional certification in Special Education (K-12) from the Arizona Department of Education. With over fifteen years of teaching experience in Burma, the U.S., and Thailand, education has always been my passion.
Originally, I created my YouTube channel and website, Myanmar Schoolhouse, as a resource for my son. However, over the past years, it has grown into a valuable learning hub for children from Burma and Burmese migrant communities worldwide. As a parent, I faced the challenge of finding quality Burmese language learning materials for my son. This led me to spend a year teaching Burmese to Burmese American children at a Buddhist monastery in the U.S. as part of a volunteer educational and cultural outreach program organized by a Buddhist monk.
During my time at the monastery, I gained invaluable experience in developing a basic language curriculum, creating engaging teaching materials and activities, and working with children who spoke Burmese at home but couldn’t yet read or write it. Inspired by this experience, I founded Myanmar Schoolhouse to share my knowledge, skills, and passion for teaching. My hope is that it will become a go-to resource for Burmese language learning, providing easily accessible videos and materials for learners everywhere.

ကျွန်မ နဲ့ ကျွန်မ မိသားစု ပြည်ပနိုင်ငံတွေမှာနေထိုင်စဥ်မှာ ကျွန်မရဲ့ သားလေးကို မြန်မာစာ အခြေခံ စာရေး စာဖတ်ကို လေ့လာ တတ်ကျွမ်းစေချင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ သူအားလပ်ချိန်မှာ မြန်မာစာ သင်ကြားဖို့ သင်ခန်းစာတွေ၊ ဖတ်စရာ စာအုပ်တွေကို ရှာဖွေတဲ့ခါ လွယ်လွယ်ကူကူရှာဖွေလို့ မရခဲ့ပါဘူး။ ဒါကြောင့် YouTube video တွေလုပ်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့ပြီး Myanmar Schoolhouse YouTube Channel ကိုစတင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ကျွန်မ အရင်က အမေရိကန်နိုင်ငံ Miramar မြို့ မြန်မာ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာ ဘုန်းကြီးကျောင်းမှာ မြန်မာစာ အခြေခံ စာရေး စာဖတ်ကို volunteer လုပ်ပြီး တစ်နှစ်ကြာ သင်ကြားခဲ့ဖူးပါတယ်။ အဲ့ဒီကရခဲ့တဲ့ experience တွေနဲ့ ကိုယ်တိုင် ကျောင်းတွေမှာ စာသင်ရင်းရခဲ့တဲ့ experience တွေကိုပေါင်းပြီး Myanmar Schoolhouse ကို မြန်မာစာ အခြေခံ စာရေး စာဖတ်လေ့လာ တတ်ကျွမ်း လိုသူ ကလေး၊ လူကြီး အားလုံး အတွက်ရည်ရွယ်ပြီး စတင်ခဲ့ခြင်းဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

How we got the name, Myanmar Schoolhouse
When choosing a name for this website and its YouTube channel, I wanted something that felt both unique and personal. Since this channel was created for deeply personal reasons, I knew I wanted the word “Myanmar” included, as its purpose is to help others learn the Burmese language.
The inspiration for “Schoolhouse” came while reading A Pocketful of Cricket by Rebecca Caudill to my eight-year-old son. After finishing the book, I realized it was the perfect name. According to Merriam-Webster, a "schoolhouse" is a building used as a school, particularly an elementary school. Since I initially created these videos as a mother, helping my son develop basic Burmese reading and writing skills at home, “Myanmar Schoolhouse” felt like a natural fit.
Additionally, the initials “MS” made the name even more meaningful, as they are the initials of my beloved father, who passed away in 2015. He dedicated much of his life to teaching and higher education in Burma, and through this channel, I can share my passion for education while honoring his legacy.
